The Joy Formidable's Singles Club

The Joy Formidable just announced their new singles club, Aruthrol.  The club plans to release a series of 7" vinyls that are split with other bands.  The first release, Aruthrol A just came out in a limited 500 copy run and is split with Colorama.  The band made a video for their track "Yn Rhydiau'r Afon", filmed in and on the banks of the Welsh river Alyn.

If you need a brush-up on the awesomeness of The Joy Formidable, you can read my REALLY OLD interview with lead singer Ritzy Bryan.

Holy Eno, Batman!

Ermahgerd . . . the new Brian Eno + Karl Hyde album High Life that drops on July 1st is so friggin' good. I'm loving the track "Return" -- and yes, I realize it's the first track on the album. I listened to it all and I still like it so I'm pointing it out. Check it out in advance on Pitchfork.

old crow medicine show - new album on npr

head on over to npr to stream old crow medicine show's july 1st release, remedy. if there's one thing in this world that i can appreciate, it's well-dressed me pickin' on a variety of stringed instruments. so, ya know, this is something i can stamp my approval on. they'll be debuting this spunky collection of tunes at the grand ole opry on release day. i like how this list of tracks slaps you in the face with speedy, twangy goodness right up front, then brings it down a few notches with some more ballad-type songs before returning to that sweet dos-i-do summoning stuff. i think bluegrass fans are going to be hella happy about this one.

inbox purge - just the good good

i'm going to be nice and not post the crap here. you're welcome.
  • wild ones have announced a summer tour for the northeast. while it makes no difference to me, because the northeast is not where i will be this summer, i'll share anyway, because i like these guys. tour dates here

  • ry x doesn't mind if you listen to his stuff before it's mixed. no, really, he doesn't. he's taken his jeff buckley-inspired self and shared a new tune, "sweat," with the world. not gonna lie; i'm kind of sad after listening to it. but that's okay, right?

  • sye elaine spence covers bob marley's "is this love" and this video to go along with it, which is real sweet. hang on, those wet things on my face might be tears. i know it's just people dancing, but maybe it's the complement of the music that makes it so...heartfelt. or, something.

  • sleep thieves from ireland released a new album this week. the title track, "you want the night," is trippy. i am really into this whole album, actually.

  • dry the river plans to release a new album august 26th. you can preview that noise with the video for the single, "gethsmane."

ok go - the writing's on the wall video

a day late, but, whatever. i have a life, too, ya know. here it is. ok go releases a new video for "the writing's on the wall," further proving that they are the ultimate badasses of music video-making. i feel like their next feat might be building a spaceship to take them to the great beyond so they can film there.

New Music From Alt-J Released Today

Today alt-J released "Hunger Of The Pine," the first single from their forthcoming second album, This Is All YoursStream it now via NPR. What do you think? Like or dislike?

If you're in Austin, don't miss these crazy kids at Fun, Fun, Fun Fest in November.

Black Bananas Share Album Stream Via Pitchfork

I'm sure Royal Trux fans are well-versed with Jennifer Herrema's other baby, Black Bananas, but if you're late to the party you might want to check them out. It's gritty and pretty rad. They have a new album Electric Brick Wall coming out on Drag City on June 24th and the fine fellows over at Pitchfork published an advance stream for your listening pleasure.

If you need more before committing, here's my old review of their album Rad Times Xpress IV for Blurt Magazine.

new music tuesday - june 17

what's new today?

lana del ray: ultraviolence. the one lady i have no issues channeling has released another album, labeled with explicit content, of course. i'll take two helpings of that, please. you can stream it on spotify.

j. lo: a.k.a. i honestly don't give a rat's ass about this album, but she's apparently relevant, so i'm putting it here. thanks to her, we're going to see more twerking, which i could do without. preesh, jenny.

willie nelson: band of brothers. i sat down one night and watched this guy perform on the television. being a product of a southern postsecondary education, i appreciate me some willie. it's pretty exciting that he has some new material out.

t.i. & iggy azalea: "no mediocre." mediocre is one of my favorite words. i have no idea how this will ever be able to played on the radio, though.

jenny lewis - just one of the guys

oh, jenny lewis. why you gotta be my spirit animal? i like me some folky, self-deprecating tunes more than the next person, i think. and so, this new single, "just one of the guys," is a little slice of heaven. july 29th is the magic date for the entire album, the voyager.

little dragon - variety playhouse - june 14th

i feel sad for anyone who didn't get to see this show. i have a feeling the next time they return, the venue won't be as intimate as our beloved variety playhouse. if you're in charleston or asheville, you still have a chance to see them next week on the last bit of their tour.

i had no idea there'd be an opening act, but i was actually pretty pleased with it. lawrence rothman did a short set right on time (i love that, btw). despite being called "lawrence rothman," which sounds like he's a solo act, he has a girl lending backing vocals, and another dude that does some kind of electronic musical stylings while lawrence sings. and, does he sing. his voice is so incredibly deep, it almost didn't seem like it was coming from him. i realized it was once he took the opportunity to speak to the crowd between songs. i was into it, and i'll be listening to these guys some more now. very good pairing for the main event, if you ask me. i'll leave "montauk fling" here for you to check out (don't let any virgin ears listen to it, though).

an hour after the show started, little dragon came out. i like anticipation, but sometimes, it can be too much. i did feel like that initially, but they redeemed themselves by ripping right into "mirror," making me glad i didn't throw a weird tantrum. the show was sold out, so the standing room in front of the stage was just too packed for me to justify braving it. i opted to watch from a riser, and their stage set-up is easy to admire from afar. no one can ever have enough LED lights, as far as i'm concerned. yukimi nagano is my new girl crush. her vocals were spot on - i could've been listening to the album in my car...but i much prefer to watch her sing, and sashay around in her adorable outift. at one point, i looked out and noticed that every body in the place was jumping, dancing, swaying, or all out losing it. these guys are performers, and their energy is contagious, and the songs are simply fantastic. my money was not wasted on any part of this show - what an awesome feeling.

mixtape friday - june 13

it's friday the 13th! how exciting! all we need now is a full moon and some wolves and stuff, and it's a party. but wait! it IS a full moon! oh man...i can't wait to read the news tomorrow.

*"doses & mimosas" by cherub: i'm hittin' it right out the gate this week with this song. it's like the electronic version of steel panther. so, i'm on it. real dirty-like. if you're feeling a little slack because you've been working all week, and you need your motivation to pick up, this seems to work well for that. i think my favorite part is the chorus..."to all the high class ass that's too hard to pass, oh, yeah, i hate you, too..."

*"closer" by tegan and sara: i realize this song is "old" to all the hip humans of the world, but i only just heard it. it makes me want to dance. with other people.

*"rollercoaster" by bleachers: this song is so much fun. it's like the 80s and the inception of pop punk met and came up with this song. two of my guilty pleasures rolled into one.

*"paris" by little dragon: yet another group that's going to be here this weekend. who's going to be there? i am. if you don't already have a ticket...too bad, so sad. it sold out.

*"hoochie coochie" by band of skulls: i feel like if i was walking down the street while spinning this, i'd have to involuntarily shake my ass a little from side to side.

*"brill bruisers" by the new pornographers: i'm so excited about new music from these guys! it's like a christmas present has been offered to me really super early. mark your calendars for november 6th at the buckhead theatre, by the way...so you can see them in real life.

*"kelly" by the pains of being pure at heart: these guys are opening up for the new pornographers, so it seems fitting to throw somethin' of theirs on this list. the vocals here are killer.

*"after the disco" by broken bells: the retro vibe behind this song is so, so, so delicious. it's pretty masterful, if you ask me. sold.

*"hollow ponds" by damon albarn: dude is at the fox theatre tonight, so why not include one of my favorites from everyday robots? this song is awesome. it's kind of creepy, and i love it.

*"harlem" by cathedrals: this is not their newest release as far as singles go, but i like it the best, so it goes here. i love the way the song changes throughout.

spoon they want my soul pre-order info

spoon is back with a new set of tunes, and it's sure to be pretty great. the first single, "rent i pay," is already streaming all over the place, and it has the classic spoon calling card all over it. if you wanna get in on it early, you can pre-order now on their site.  they've got bundles, too, for the superfans. if you haven't heard the single yet, do it now-it's hot.

mount sharp - icarus

what the fuzz. this. this the fuzz. brooklyn-based mount sharp is set to release an EP on august 26th. i got a nice little preview of the whole thing, and can share with you their single, "icarus." i'm really digging this. it's laid back and non-offensive, unlike most of the poo that's been hitting me lately. listen to the single below.

this is a dedication

we reached a milestone of fans on the facebooks. therefore, i am dedicating this playlist to our 100th fan, bethany. if you were ever curious what a 16-year-old girl in the 90s was curled up on her bed listening to while she was feverishly scribbling away in her journal about how much she hated life and boys and curfews and catty girls, it sounded a lot like this. i'm still scribbling about all those things (except curfew, because i am an adult now and can eat ice cream for breakfast and come in a 4am if i want). i give you, teen angst. i add to it regularly.

here are a couple of on sales to note. don't be a procrastinator, yo. i've been seeing a ton of "sold out"notices on show posters.

here are a couple of shows that are already on sale, and have tickets. maybe you should look at them.
i'm sure i'm missing a ton, but there's enough for you to gnaw on for the time being, right?

donovan wolfington is on tour

i think this is some kind of throwback pop-punk thing...donovan wolfington (who isn't completely terrible) will be touring around with pope. you can check the site for dates. i don't do drugs, and i'm not in college anymore, so i'm probably not the demo for this, but it sure is fun to watch other people do it. see below.

mixtape friday - june 6

even though i'm in austin kickin' it with claire this weekend, i still managed to bring you a playlist. amazing, aren't i? i know. anyway, i think this week should be a little more rock-based since last week i got all chill-pop and stuff. i like songs with bad words, so beware. i'm throwing the spotify list here at the end in case you're cool enough to be able to check it out that way.

"beware the dog" the griswolds - this song is like a circus. like, it sounds like a circus. i feel like i should be at an island party listening to this. and, it is so sassy. sasssssy.

"southern comfort" the orwells - from sassy to raunchy! just how i like it. i mean, i think the title of the song should give a little away.

"shake shake shake" the sounds - i seriously think this band can do no wrong. they go on every playlist i've ever made when i've been motivated to do some kind of physical activity for my health. the beats are so sick, even penicillin can't cure them. heyo!

"poster of a girl" metric - damnit, i love metric. i really don't know what i'd do without emily haines. i'd cry a lot, probably. this is one of my most favorite songs of theirs, even though it's total throwback.

"pompeii" bastille - i stumbled onto this somehow, and i played it more than once. soooo, i guess that means i dig it. although, it's a little poppy. but different than, say, anything-on-top-40 poppy.

"down" the kooks - is it just me, or does it sound like the white stripes threw up all over this song? surprisingly, i still like it, despite that.

"fever" black keys - mmmm, i was hooked on this at the very first chord. the whole album, really. but in particular, this song, and the sexiness that oozes from it. i'm down for the count.

"nashville" old 97s - i think everyone is finally realizing what i've known (or, was taught) for a while. the old 97s are kings, and this song doesn't give a shit about censoring itself. and neither does the rest of the album, and i kind of love them for that. preach on.

"the line" mood rings - this is good song to end with. to kind of bring you down from the rest of these songs. it's the musical downer of the seven uppers you've been ingesting for the past 20-something minutes. if you get a chance to catch this band, i would. i was lucky one night and saw them, and damn, i've been aching for more of them ever since. looks like they'll be at 529 on june 20th.

teddybears - sunshine video

this just in: teddybears have successfully produced the most bizarre, effed up video i have seen this calendar year. and, i've seen some shit. three words: lazer. rainbow. crotch. and here i thought i was the only person who had one of those.

temples - terminal west - october 30

just announced! temples is hitting terminal west on october 30. the onsale is tomorrow, 6/6, at 10am. you can get yours through ticketfly for $16 at this link. better plan for this.

chuck inglish & chromeo - "legs" video

oh my god. if you like hot girls in hot pants, you must watch this video of "legs" from chromeo, featuring chuck inglish. the song is super catchy, too, because what comes from chromeo that's not? nothing.

sia - eye of the needle

i've already pre-ordered sia's impending release, 1000 forms of fear, off itunes, so i'm already enjoying the first two early downloads from it. i love technology. the former zero 7 collaborator is dropping the whole thing on july 8th. she just released the second, "eye of the needle," this week. you can check it out below if you wanna get the milk for free before you buy the cow.

Preview My Brightest Diamond's New Single "Pressure"

Back in the good old days of 2008, I had the pleasure of interviewing Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) for the now-defunct chick rag Venus Zine and I instantly liked her.  She's smart, funny, creative, and dang . . . the girl makes some interesting music.  She's been on Sufjan Stevens label Asthmatic Kitty for ages and it looks like she's dropping a new release, This Is My Hand, on September 16th.

Take a listen to the first single "Pressure" and if you dig it, get your CD or digital pre-order on. Enjoy!

>eternal death "bullet" oh, look, another synth-club song that sounds like all of the other ones that came before it! i'm going to pass.

>secret stages festival - if, for some reason, you live, or find yourself in, birmingham, alabama on august 1 & 2, you can catch these bands at the secret stages festival. i like the idea of this; taking unknowns and giving them one place to play over a weekend to grab some exposure. brilliant. i recall that was why i started blogging in the first place...

noteworthy new new - june 3

it's new music tuesday! here are a couple to take note of in case your digital device needs some sustenance.

the orwells - disgraceland...i've already decided to include one of the tracks from this on this week's mixtape. i like a little dirty rock from time to time. i feel a little filthy listening to it. you can check it out on their website.

clap your hands say yeah - only run...ok, fine. i like it. i've been a skeptic in the past, but maybe i was just musically immature. mayyyybe.

gold-bears - dalliance...here's some local flavor. most of these songs kind of sound the same to me. it's fun, though.

lp - forever for now...claire wrote a piece about this that you can read here. i think it's too top 40ish for me. it's out today.

james - la petit mort...i just thought i'd mention this since i was totally listening to "laid" the other day. seems like it was a sign from the universe. or something.

speaking of the 90s, here's a video from charli xcx. girlfriend's sportin' a choker. "boom clap" can be found on the fault in our stars soundtrack.

Monogem - Follow You

yay for monogem and this sweet new tune, "follow you," that you can listen to on soundcloud. i'm kind of excited to hear the rest of this ep once it's released based on this teaser nugget that landed in my inbox. so very glad i decided to open it! there's a definite retro vibe here that i can dig as a girl from the 80s (yah, i know), and since i've been needing that whole smooth-sexy-listening-times lately, this is right up my alley. listen below, please. kthxbai.

Grace & Tony Greenroom Session with John Paul White

monday sucks, so here is something that doesn't. i posted one of these videos from talented grace and tony a couple months ago. this is another installment in the greenroom sessions, featuring john paul white from the civil wars (who, btw, just released an album of live recordings done at our very own eddie's attic). here they are performing "november," with the added sound of a cello. every song should have a cello! please follow this link to witness some real music.
