Back To Pickin'.

I haven't done a Pick of the Week in a while. I have a good excuse, though! I've been trying to figure out how to work Photoshop better so I could make this kick ass "award" to give out when I pick someone. It looks like this:

I'll try to keep up, I promise. (PS - I know I suck at Photoshop. I'm not a graphic designer. The only thing I can draw is bubble letters.)

So, my Pick for this week is a band that doesn't play out often at all, and when they do, it's normally in a small place like a coffee shop or something like that. I like knowing about bands like this because it's like you can watch them come together and get acquainted with their music at an early stage.

I mentioned them in a blog post last week since they have a show at Johnny's Pizza in Inman Park this Saturday, August 11th. I was actually at Johnny's last night...they apparently have jazz on Sundays. It's a small place, but I can't think of anything better than really cheap beer, really greasy pizza, and really good music on a Saturday night.

Sooooo, if you want to pass up all the larger shows on Saturday and put yourself in a more chill environment (man, I'm getting old when I get more excited about pizza and music than raging with the hipsters...), come see Carousel 5. They're a four-piece band rounded out with a frontlady and are worthy of a listen. Their music is rock, but definitely leans on the pop side as well. They list the Sundays as one of their influences, and I can definitely hear that, and I sure as hell dug the Sundays when they were gracing the radio waves. (They covered "Wild Horses" in the 90's, remember? I'm pretty sure that was the soundtrack for the rollercoaster scene in Fear.) They also kind of remind me Dar Williams, probably from the ethereal vocals...it's an uplifting sound. I like the song "So Absolutely" that they have on MySpace (link above), so go listen. If you likey, they have a CD called Retrostatic that you can buy.
